Valley Metro Rail is a 28.2-mile (38 stations) light rail line serving the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa in Arizona. The network, which is part of the Valley Metro public transit system, began operations on December 27, 2008. Since its opening, the system has undergone four expansions, including the recent opening of the Tempe Streetcar, which is 3-mile (14 stops) system.

Starting Hourly Wage: $20.38 per Hour.

Summary

Light Rail Train Operators are responsible for safe operation and transportation of rail vehicles and passengers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Train Operator’s essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Complete and maintain certification to operate light rail vehicle
  • Follow and comply with of all rules, regulations, and signals governing day to day operations
  • Assure that all train operations occur within safe limits of speed, route, dwell, and other characteristics of train operations
  • Coordinate with and respond to the direction of local supervision and OCC in all aspects of revenue service operations
  • Respond to passenger calls on the train intercom (POIC)
  • Assist passengers in all situations and keep them informed of current conditions through announcements over public announcement system or personal contact
  • In the event of an emergency assist in the evacuation of passengers form the train onto the station, platform or right of way
  • Monitor all on-board conditions to ensure vehicles are operating as designed
  • Troubleshoot the vehicle as directed by Supervision in the event of any abnormal situations and file a completed Defect Report with Maintenance
  • At the end of each shift, file an unusual occurrences report (UOR) for any incident that occurred
  • Coordinate closely with Supervisors and other staff to ensure the safety, comfort and convenience of all passengers
  • Be able to multitask and communicate effectively.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates must be 21-years old and possess a valid driver’s license for at least three years; be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test, criminal background and driving record screening; and possess/obtain and maintain DOT medical certification.

Education and/or Experience

Minimum of high school diploma or general education degree (GED), two years related work experience and successfully complete training program

Qualified applicants must be 21 years or older with valid driver’s license and any other certificates, licenses and registrations as required by law to perform the specified functions.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must successfully complete train operations training program and Train Operator recertification annually. Possession of a valid driver’s license and a valid DOT certification and any other certificates, licenses and registrations as required by law to perform the specified functions

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
